MENSTRUPEDIA: A Graphic Book

It’s just a period

72% of girls start their period without understanding what is happening to them and why. We at Edora want to normalise the conversation around periods to ensure children do not feel the stigma and apprehension that sometimes surrounds menstruation. Our book Menstrupedia allows parents to properly engage with their daughters from the very first conversation they have about periods. Discover the book below.

The book

Menstrupedia is an engaging, comprehensive and fully illustrated story about three girls, Grace, Rose and Lucy as they go on a thrilling adventure and discover what periods are, learn about tracking their menstrual cycle and understand the importance of health and hygiene measures during their periods. On this journey led by Grace’s older sister Chloe, the girls begin to understand that their periods are nothing to be uncomfortable about. Periods do not make them weaker, they only make them strong and unstoppable.

The content

Our book brings together the collective wisdom from parents, gynaecologists, educators (and kids!) on what they wish they knew before and after they started their periods. The book is written simply and clearly in an easy to understand format so girls can read independently at their own pace. Topics covered include:

HOW AND WHY PERIODS HAPPEN
Girls learn the fundamentals and get answers to their urgent questions! What are periods? Why women get them? How do periods happen? Why women bleed? Do periods hurt? The book explains absolutely everything girls want to know.

MANAGING PERIODS AT SCHOOL
The book reassures girls that going to school while on their period is easy and nothing to feel uncomfortable about. The girls learn the tips and tricks to conquer the school day as well as understand the hygienic measures they must take to properly manage their periods.

TRACKING THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE
Periods are only a small part of the menstrual cycle. The book covers the important aspects of the menstrual cycle that happen inside the body so girls understand the science behind their periods too. The girls also learn how to work out when they’ll get their next period.

USING PADS AND TAMPONS
Should I use a pad? Or a tampon? Where do I get one when at school? Can I buy one anywhere? When should I change my pad or tampon? The girls get answers to all these burning questions and more so they can make the best choice that’s right for them.

IDENTIFYING AND MANAGING PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME (PMS)
What is PMS? How do we identify it? How can we manage it without disrupting our school week? The girls learn the important things about PMS and what to do to minimise its impact during their periods.

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

Important notes throughout the book flag to the girls the circumstances in which to see a doctor, just as a precaution. This helps girls understand what’s normal and what’s not so they know when to seek help.
